Dr. Shumway Interview - Chat
Dr. Shumway Interview
1. I have been a Cosmetic Surgeon for Twenty Years.
2. My Father and other Shumway relatives are surgeons. I chose
Cosmetic Surgery because it is the most "exacting"
of all surgical specialties.......I am a perfectionist!
3. TUBA (all upper case letters) means TransUmbilical Breast
Augmentation and it is incredibly futuristic. TUBA is amazing
Cosmetic Surgery. Imagine: breast implants with NO scars!
I have performed literally thousands of successful TUBA operations.
I am the KING of TUBA and I have taught many other surgeons
how to perform this fantastic procedure.
4. Rhinoplasty, Face Lifts, Aesthetic Laser Skin Resurfacing,
Liposuction, Abdominoplasty, Silicone Gel Breast Augmentations,
Blepharoplasty, Otoplasty, Brow Lifts, etc. I am a Diplomate
of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery, a Diplomate of
the American Board of Facial Plastic &Reconstructive Surgery,
and a Diplomate of the American Board of Otolaryngology (Head
& Neck Surgery). I have also had many years of training
in General & Thoracic Surgery and Cosmetic Dermatological
& Aesthetic LASER Surgery. I have performed many years
of medical & surgical research at ASU, University of Arizona,
Duke and UCLA.
5. NO. Because I do so many breast augmentation cases. You
become super good at activities that you perform over &
over & over again. Talent, hard work & practice lead
to success.
6.Do not go to just anyone because that makes absolutely no
sense at all. Consult with True Cosmetic Surgeons who are
actual Diplomates of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery.
This board is the ONLY surgical board that is dedicated solely
to the specialty of Cosmetic Surgery and only Cosmetic Surgery.
7. My surgeon Father: Ord L. Shumway, MD, FACS. My Duke surgery
mentor: David C.Sabiston, Jr., MD, FACS. My fellowship director
& UCLA Professor: Walter E. Berman, MD. My relative &
Stanford cardiac surgeon: Norman Shumway, MD, FACS.
8. My philosophy regarding Cosmetic Surgery is to treat my
patients like "family." In other words, I take excellent
care of all my patients and always go the extra mile for them.
This was the way I was trained at Duke, UCLA, Arizona and
UCSD.
9. Yes, for unrealistic expectations and for health issues.
Cosmetic Surgery is elective and all patients must be screened
by me before they are allowed to have surgery performed on
them at SHUMWAY COSMETIC SURGERY.
10. Thirty percent of my case load is revision surgery from
other physicians. However, this large number does not necessarily
mean that all other surgeons are performing inferior work.
It is wise to remember that patient compliance and good patient/surgeon
communication are also key elements in obtaining excellent
surgical outcomes. Furthermore, since we all live in glass
houses, it is not wise to throw rocks...................what
goes around, comes around!
11. I have spent many, many years developing & perfecting
the Art of Cosmetic Surgery. For sure, continuing medical
education is the key to surgical progression, i.e., there
is a better way of doing Cosmetic Surgery and then a better
way after that, and so forth. I believe in teaching other
doctors how to perform Cosmetic Surgery because the teacher
always gains so much more than even his students. As a Trustee
of the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and as a Trustee
of the American Academy of Cosmetic Surgery, I feel that our
most precious gift to others is our time and service we give
to our patients.
Thank you for this opportunity to express just a few of my feeling regarding Cosmetic Surgery.
Most Sincerely,
Robert A. Shumway, MD, FACS
